Brief Information:
Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), as it has been known for the past 73 years, is the leading railway locomotive manufacturer of the world and has been the flagship production unit of Indian Railways. CLW has remained a pioneer in turning out electric locomotives to international standards, providing safe and comfortable journeys for railway passengers. CLW, thus plays a key role in making Indian Railway’s self-reliance in the field of electric locomotive production, becoming a prime mover to the Indian economy.
It has manufactured more than 12000 locomotives of various classes since its inception which comprises; 2351 nos. of steam locomotives (1950-1968), 842 diesel locomotives (1968-1993), and 9105 electric locomotives of different types from 1961. About 90% of all electric locomotives ever used by IR have come from assembly lines of CLW.
CLW was adjudged the best Production Unit of IR along with ICF for the year 2021-22 and was given the Best Production Unit Shield on 28th May 2022 by Hon’ble MR Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw during the annual award function at Bhubaneswar.
